The Vezo are dependent on marine resources for survival. They rely on the ocean waters for food, transport, trade and cultural activities.
Octopus is the primary economic source in Andavadoaka, with men fishing for octopus in boats while women walk rocky coasts using spears to make their catch.
Traditionally, villagers fished to feed their families and sell their catch locally. But many now work for international companies who supply octopus to a global market.
Fishermen are benefiting financially, but this new market -- coupled with rapidly growing coastal populations -- is threatening the health of local marine resources.
